It is very important that when you burn your pillar candle the first time, you burn it long enough for the wax pool to burn across the top of the candle, leaving perhaps an 1/8" wall. This will determine how well the candle will burn during subsequent burns — it forms a ‘memory,’ so to speak. (The initial burn usually takes about 3 hours. Subsequent burns may take longer to melt the entire wax pool. If not allowed to burn long enough, the tunnel that forms might be too narrow to allow air to the wick. If allowed to burn too long, the heat of the wax pool could create holes in the side, allowing hot wax to escape.) Always place pillar candles on stable, flame-resistant candle holders, and place votive candles inside appropriate votive holders. Tea lights are poured into clear plastic cups, and don't need to be placed in a holder. Do not ever leave your candle unattended! Keep candles away from drafts and flammable objects. (Being near moving air will cause the candle to burn more quickly and possibly unevenly.) Trim the wick between 1/4" and 3/8" after each use. To keep the inner walls of your candle clean, it is best to light it with a long-handled lighter or match. With a short lighter or match, a layer of soot from the flame can be left behind if touches the candle wall. Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris. Use good sense and be respectful of the qualities of hot wax and flame!
